The most popular sport by far on South Padre is the sport of fishing. There are several different types of fishing such as pier fishing, channel fishing, jetty fishing, surf fishing, spear fishing, bay fishing, and deep sea fishing. If bay fishing is what you like there are many experienced captains that render there fishing services. The most common fish found in the Laguna Madre Bay are red fish, speckled trout, snook and flounder. If you feel like you want to try your luck in the surf, then you should get ready for anything! There is no telling what you will catch in the surf. Surf fishing is good all year-round. It requires only medium-weight tackle and some shrimp, squid, or mullet for bait. Hard-fighting species like Pompano, Whiting, Redfish , Flounder and Jack Crevalle thrive in the 36 mile stretch of fishing area. There are guides that can hook you up with some great surf fishing excursions for the whole family. Pier fishing is also available. There are two long fishing piers that are lit up all night twenty four hours a day. If you don't have a pole, there are some available for a charge. Offshore and Deep Sea trips usually go out on half day or full day trips. Everything from Snapper to Marlin hang in the Gulf waters about thirty plus miles out. You can hire a private charter or go on a party boat. Fishing off the southern jetties is another great place to fish. Find a rock of your choice and cast off. |
