The Laguna Madre Bay is a huge body of water that separates South Padre Island from the Texas mainland. The entire bay (north of the causeway) is shallow and the depth varies from just inches to about four and a half feet deep. Along the bay seawall lies many million-dollar estates, fishing piers, great bars and tasty restaurants. When the sun rises over the waves of the Gulf of Mexico you can bet it is indeed a spectacular site. Now for an even better display of Mother Nature, you need to check out one of the three hundred and sixty five beautiful sunsets that the bay displays every year. The bayside also offers great fishing, watersports, dolphin watching, swimming, snorkeling, and of course fireworks every Friday night during the summer months (May-September). For the fisherman or woman, lots of redfish, trophey trout, snook, and flounder are caught within the Laguna Madre bay system. Bay temperatures vary from 65 degrees in the winter up to about 85 degrees in the summer and is usually clear and visible down to the sea floor. If you would like to drive up onto the sand on the bay, there is a bay access one half mile north of the convention center. This access lets you drive up to the water and explore the shore. This is a great place for kite boarders, wind surfers, sailboats, and a perfect place to use the winds of the gulf to fly your kite.
