There are a number of reasosns why fisherman or women do not fish from boats. No matter what the case, surf fishing is fun for everyone and very inexpensive. Fishing from the beach is great all year round. All you need are some chairs, rod and reels, rod holders and bait. You can fish anywhere on the surf, The best place to fish is somewhere not around many people, north of the Island is great! First things first, it's a good idea to get a four wheel drive vehicle. On South Padre it is legal to drive on the beach at the county park north of the Island . Surf fisherman on the Island, cruise the beach (where allowed) looking for birds working a school of baitfish. Seagulls will follow a moving school of bait fish for miles. The most abundant fish in the gulf is the saltwater whitefish or whiting. Although these fish do not grow to be very big, they are a great fish to fight and great to eat. Other fish include redfish, speckled trout, jack crevelle, shark, pompano and flounder. There is no telling what fish you will encounter out on the surf. Surf rods from 7 to10 feet long are commonly used. A great suggestion would be to put a led weight on the bottom of the line ranging from 1-7 ounce weight depending on the surf conditions. Really good bait to use would be dead or live shrimp, bally whoo, squid, live or dead mullet, and all sorts of artificials. Check out the local bait shops for more information.
