MERCANT MARINERS ARE CERTIFIED BY THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD
The United States Merchant Marine refers to the fleet of the nation's civilian-owned merchant vessels— operated by either the government or by private captains— that are engaged in commerce or transportation of goods and services within the U.S. waters. The merchant marine is responsible for transporting cargo and or passengers during peace time. In time of war, the merchant marine is an auxiliary to the armed forces , and can be deployed to active status. As of 2007, the United States merchant fleet numbered approximately 69,000 people and out of that number aprox. 100 are resided in or around the town of South Padre Island. All Captains/guides are certified and trained to handle all types of nautical scenarios, first aid, and are drug tested thoroughly.
